The first use of GIS was for military purposes. Developed to support the operational activities of military forces and remain to this day the most important design tools in all military operations around the world.

They also keep accurate information about terrain, infrastructure of a region (road/rail networks, airports, stations, etc.), the positions of forces (friendly and enemy), potential targets, use high-precision satellite images, and are able to provide to the staff officers a direct picture of an evolving business.
